What To Expect

These self-proclaimed "Eastern Hippies" are exceptions in China's collective society. Many of them spent their childhoods in solitude and went through rebellious youth, seeking identity in underground cultures. Now, you are invited to step into their collective sanctuary when the night falls. The founders of one of Shanghai's most renowned indie clubs will lead you on a journey through the hidden spots known only to this community. On a shared bike costing just 50 cents, you’ll speed between four secret destinations. You'll experience music of diverse traditions and influences, sip on unique signature drinks at each stop, and witness a cultural marvel found nowhere else in China. YOUR CAPTAIN: Javis / Hart / Vil
Javis, Hart, and Vil call themselves the "Middle-Aged Rebels." They are seasoned veterans of Shanghai’s underground music scene and the founders of two indie clubs, "TANG" and "HUYOU”. Like many young people around the world, they once felt lost, defiant, and yearning to create change. They’ve organized hundreds of underground cultural gatherings, including China's first-ever Burning Man festival. They may no longer be young, but the spirit of their youth lives on in a new generation under the dim lights.
“A paradise created by the lonely kids”, says Javis, “for the lonely kids." GROUP SIZE: 5-8 guests LANGUAGES: Javis / Hart / Vil speak Chinese, with an English translator present on-site. TYPE OF PLACE: Indie Clubs EXPERIENCE DETAILS Your adventure begins at Shanghai's oldest underground club, so ancient that it’s known for “outlasting the elderly upstairs who used to call the police.” This place has become a symbol of persistence. In the dim-lit, basement space, you’ll find equipment dating back decades, still running as if the young people who once gathered here have never left. Next, you’ll visit Javis' most famous venue, "TANG” (躺, meaning ‘lay down’ in Chinese) — a space that's literally just one giant bed. Here, people from every corner of the world lie back, all while diverse world music fills the air. You’ll encounter wooden tables from the mountainous regions of Yunnan, blankets from Central Asia, plants from the Mediterranean, and handmade lights from ethnic minorities…Moreover, you’ll join the city’s liberal community for a gathering, enjoy hard-hitting music from distant continents, and dance with DJs hidden in the crowd. This surreal world will unfold before your eyes, vivid and alive.
